Taliban’s sudden and mysterious takeover of Kabul was of course a surprise for the whole world, but their subsequent actions against women was not at a surprise at least for Afghan women who immediately began to feel a sense of déjà vu, reminding them of the gloomy past. As was to be expected, Taliban had no hesitation in emplacing a systematic segregation or better to say gender apartheid as soon as they seized power; and their very first target was innocent school girls who were barred from going to school. And then they went after the female employees and women activists. This all happened in this modern era; in front of our own eyes while the world is just watching them, or in a better case issuing statements.
Dear sisters and comrades, accept my warm greetings and I warmly shake your hands
It is a great honor to attend this year conference at Autumn University of Podemos through zoom. I thank Podemos and all other organizers for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to talk about the current situation of women under the domination of the most brutal and misogynist regime of Taliban.
I am thrilled and honored to join you on this historical tribunal. All Afghans, particularly the families of the war victims expect the Belmarsh Tribunal to heal their wounds by holding the U.S. accountable for the thousands of innocent Afghans lives they destroyed and the future they stole. And I salute the Progressive International for this remarkable initiative.
For over 50 years, the plight of Afghan women, being the most unfortunate victims of violence, has always been the hot topic for the international events, whether it was the International Women’s Day or the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and yet, they continue to experience the worst forms of violence — honor killings, rape, beatings, lashings, imposed prostitution, acid attacks and forced marriage.
